Camp Cedar Valley - Viola, Arkansas

The Bush family (think beans, not beer) offer this site for $3000 a use.  Small Gray Bear utilizes it for Diamond Wars, since that $3000 covers several days.

Camp Cedar Valley covers 777 acres south of Viola, Arkansas.  It is primarily a camping site. The site is pet-friendly and allows alcohol (please take home empties) and smoking (please dispose of your butts).  There is no swimming or fishing allowed.  Click here for nearby amenities, restaurants, etc.

The hall seats up to 200 people at tables with chairs and benches.  It is roughly 100 feet long by 40 feet wide, with an attached porch on the west side that offers an additional 30x30' of covered space.

A restroom to the north split for men (2 urinals, 2 toilets) and women (4 toilets) serves as facilities to the hall.  There is a water spigot out front and an electrical outlet in back.

There is a large feast hall with fully equipped (though no longer stocked with knives) kitchen, walk-in fridge and freezer (call ahead to have turned on in advance), chest freezer, reach-in cooler, triple sink, vegetable sink, handwashing sink, convection oven, traditional Vulcan/Viking style range, Hobart mixer and plenty of prep space.  There are dishes, utensils and cups available, along with eight five-gallon beverage coolers.  There is a dishwashing station.

Bathhouses:  There are currently three bathhouses on site.  One sits in a flat RV camping and flat family camping area with an extended pavilion porch.  The porch is often used as location for Troll.  The women's side has two toilets and two showers.  The men's side has a urinal, a toilet and two showers.  There are electrical outlets on all four sides of this bathhouse, and a water spigot out back.

An open air bathhouse is located in a campground north of the main road through site, north of the feast hall.  It is to the east of a large flat area with concrete tent platforms (commonly used by the Calontiri at Diamond Wars).  This bathhouse has three large shower stalls, three toilets and a urinal trough plus four sinks.

The former poolhouse is under renovation.  Currently it houses four separate restrooms with toilets and sinks.  The former open air pool showers have been removed and will be replaced with new enclosed showers.  Completion is expected by Spring 2016.

There are four cabins available on the site, each with a complete kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.  They are:

Eagle Watch:  Located near the lake, this one bedroom unit has two twin beds in its bedroom, a bathroom with toilet and shower, a small open kitchen with bar and a small living area with a full sized sleeper sofa.  There is a tiny deck on the back as well as a stone patio with barbecue grill.  Electrical outlets can be found in the breezeway between the living quarters and storage space.

Trading Post:  Located on the west end of the Parade Grounds, this cabin features two bedrooms, one with two twin beds and one with a full bed.  The bedrooms in this unit are large and there is plenty of space for a queen sized air mattress in either.  It has a bathroom with a shower and toilet.  The main room consists of an open, fully equipped galley kitchen, a dining room table for six to eight, a chaise lounge, a daybed, a couch (no pull-out) and other chairs.  There is room for cots or air mattresses.  This unit also has a washer and dryer.  There is a water spigot and sink trough to the southwest of the building, and electrical outlets on three sides that work.

Buckhorn:  Located just to the east of the hall, this two-bedroom unit has a small U-shaped kitchen, a small Jack-and-Jill bath with shower and toilet, a dining area and living area with one loveseat and one queen sized sleeper sofa.  One bedroom has a full sized bed while the other offers two twins.  There is a water spigot to the west of this building, but the electrical outlets on the outside do not work.

Shady Grove:  This "scout house" has a mostly open floorplan.  The main sleeping area has six matching twin sized beds.  There is also a tiny single bedroom with a twin bed and another bedroom with two twin beds.  There is a half bath between the two tiny bedrooms.  There are two full bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bathtub-and-shower combination, off the main sleeping quarters.  The central living area has a woodframed couch and chair, coffee table, metal hutch, four-person dining combo, writing desk with chair, folding table and two benches (the folding table and benches are usually relocated to under the back eaves during events for floorspace).  There's adequate floor space for 5-8 individuals.  The kitchen is fully equipped but a very tight galley with an undersized stove. There is a stack washer and dryer in one of the closets.

There is a chapel on a point into the lake south of the Parade Grounds.  The chapel is a A frame structure, 15x25 feet at the bottom with electrical outlets and lights.  Aluminum benches face the chapel.

The Parade Grounds consist of the long lawn between the Trading Post Cabin, the Chapel and the Main Hall.  Three flagpoles are set into concrete 110" from the porch of the main hall and roughly 140" from the front porch of the Trading Post cabin.  There is an electrical power box 12" east of the flagpole set with four working outlets.  No ground fires or horses are allowed on the turfed section of the Parade Grounds.

There is a 20x40 pavilion located at the crossroads between the hall and Eagle Watch cabin.  It has electricity, lights and a water spigot along with several picnic tables.  The floor is gravel.

There is an amphitheater located on the lakeshore south of the Eagle Watch cabin.  It's not commonly used at SCA events thanks to its distance from the hall and the lack of electricity.

There is a hayfield east of the RV/Family Camping section available for thrown weapons, archery and siege weapon demonstrations.  Use is free but must be confirmed at least a month before any event.

There is a parking area west of RV/Family Camping near site entrance that can hold 60 cars.

There are several camping locations around site.

RV/Family Camping.  This flat area under pine trees towards the front of the site features at least six RV pull-in driveways (no pull-throughs) on the north side of the loop with electrical outlets and water faucets.  The south side of the loop offers several dilapidated wooden tent flats with electrical outlets, along with a great deal of flat camping space.  Equestrian camping is usually set for the west end of this area.

Shady Grove camping:  A small grotto behind the cabin has been cleared and can handle approximately 250sf of tents.  A larger fenced flat field in front of the cabin could accommodate a dozen campers.  It includes a fire ring.

Small field camp:  A small field across the road from the driveway to Shady Grove cabin is large enough for a dozen tents.

Beehive area camp:  A small flat field cleared near a fenced tree growth area provides space for up to 20 tents between the driveway to the Shady Grove cabin and the turnoff for the hall.

Buckhorn camping area.  A flat area below the main hall and to the north of the Buckhorn cabin offers space for up to 30 tents.  There is a propane tank in the area to be regarded.  This camping area is on a plateau above the beehive area camp.

Woods camp 1:  This is a large flat area north of the Main Hall, secluded with its own bathhouse.  It includes a few dozen concrete tent pads, a permanently erected Scout tent (12x12?) and a large flat mowed area under mostly pine trees.  It can hold up to 60 tents.  This site is usually utilized by the Calontiri at Diamond Wars.

Woods camp 2:  Access to this hidden site is along an electric line right-of-way.  This is a large mowed camping area with latrine under deciduous trees, north of the Parade Grounds.  It can hold up to 40 tents.  This site was utilized by the Shire of Lagerdamm at Diamond Wars 30.

Bell camp,  This is a large field above the levee, located approximately 100 feet behind the Trading Post cabin.  There is a large brass bell that has been cordoned off at the entrance.  The area consists of a long narrow treeless flat to the north of the access road (used for parking), a larger flat along the treeline to the southeast and a main area under several old oak trees.  There are are at least five picnic tables in the area.  This appears to be the highest point at Camp Cedar Valley.  There are no electrical or water hookups.  It could hold up to 40 tents

Apache camp.  This camp is reached via the access road that runs through the Bell camp to the northwest.  It is a small camping area with no electrical or water outlets that can hold up to 15 tents in its cleared section.  A disused latrine is located to the north and below the main camping area here; it has not been cleared and there is a hole in the roof.  Several dilapidated tent pads are located near the latrine.

Distant field camp.  Located at the end of the access road from Bell camp, this is a very large open area that is secluded but well kept.  There are no electrical or water hookups at this site.  The one lone permanent portable restroom facility appears to not have been opened or used in a decade.  There is an old pavilion that has lost structural integrity near the entrance.  However, this very large camp could hold 100 tents.

Trading Post camping.  There is a fenced-off field behind the Trading Post cabin that is very flat and has access to electricity and water.  This is a prefered site for C-PAP users.  It can hold 20 tents.

Osage camp.  This camp is located down the road from the Eagle Watch cabin just past the amphitheater.  It is a flat spot in a wooded area with lots of shade. There is a usable latrine and sink trough, though the water has not been tried at this location.  The area is approximately 100 feet from the rear of the former poolhouse.  It could hold 20-30 tents.

Poolhouse camping (note: the pool was filled in around 2010 with sand to create a volleyball area).  This large flat area surrounds a sand pit and bathhouse.  It has space for up to 100 tents.

These camping areas are located on approximately 1/4 of the available site.  There are many more areas away from the hall, but they have not been explored or documented for SCA use at this time.

The Barenlager.  This is a barn-style structure constructed by members of Small Gray Bear as a fighting scenario option.  It is located deep in the woods between Osage camp and the water tower.  There are five 10x10 panels that must be set up before each use, stored at this location.
